Saturday after Reminiscere

14 March 2020

“Remember (Reminiscere), O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they have been ever of old.”

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Lutheran Church,

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We will have church and Bible class/Sunday school at the normal times tomorrow.

We are all concerned to one degree or another about the coronavirus and its spread. We pray regularly for our soldiers and missionaries who find themselves facing hardship and danger. Now we all find ourselves in the midst of the fray. We trust our Lord Jesus to protect us, who is a “Mighty Fortress . . . a trusty Shield and Weapon; He helps us free from every need that hath us now o’ertaken.” As Psalm 46 then states, “we will not fear, though the earth be removed and the mountains be cast into the depths of the sea” because God is in the midst of us! “We shall not be moved.”

We all have responsibilities with regard to this matter, to our neighbors (be they family, fellow church members, co-workers, the elderly, the young), to those in authority around us, and to those who serve us in the medical field. Love requires that we exercise great care.

With respect to church services, NC Governor Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency and has recommended that all gatherings of 100 people or more be cancelled. This does not apply directly to Trinity due to our size—and it is but a recommendation. We will continue to gather for worship, each person or family determining whether it is best to attend.

We urge members who are sick to stay at home, but also to make the pastor aware so that he can pray and provide pastoral care as needed.

We ask that all refrain from handshaking and hugs for a time. As pastor I have implemented this practice already in all my contacts since early in the week. [It seemed a bit rude to withhold my hand from a new acquaintance at the grocery and from the daughter of an elderly person I visit, but they quickly understood.]

The offering will be taken as normal, the ushers and counters will be responsible for touching the offering plates.

Lord’s Supper: At the altar I will be using Everclear (95% alcohol) to cleanse my fingers and on the purificator to clean the lip of the common cup. Individual cups are available and members may even take “theirs” home with them and bring it again each week, thus being responsible for it themselves, if they would like.

I will place the host in the hand of the communicant or carefully on the tongue if that is preferred. Be aware of your touching the kneeling rail—you might use closed fists.

Tomorrow is Oculi: “Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord.” Lord, have mercy on us all. In Christ,

Pr Olson

Trinity Lutheran Church is a small confessional congregation of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod located in the picturesque Pacolet Valley three miles west of Tryon on the road to Saluda.

Built on the bank of the little Pacolet River with mountains all around, Trinity is surrounded by beauty, a fitting framework for the saving Gospel that is proclaimed within its walls and for the Lord’s Supper celebrated there.

The members of Trinity lift up their eyes unto the hills. From whence comes their help? Their help comes from the Lord. They are like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not whither.

A biblical and liturgical church, Trinity draws its members from Polk, Rutherford and Henderson Counties in North Carolina, as well as from Spartanburg and Greenville Counties in northern South Carolina. Locals and transplants from the North are united as one in the saving Blood of Jesus Christ.

Our Mission

Trinity Lutheran Church Is Gathered by God’s Grace, Committed to God’s Word, Faithful in Worship, Focused On Forgiveness, Acting In Love, Sharing The Gospel, Giving God The Glory!

Lutheranism is not "a confessing movement within the Church universal"; it is the confessional movement of the Church universal.
